Tibet is the cultural homeland of the Tibetan people. The area is roughly the size of western Europe and it lies along the southwestern corner of China. The country was first unified under Songtsän Gampo during the seventh century AD. Despite experiencing many invasions and rulers over the centuries, the Tibetan people have retained a distinctive cultural and religious heritage. They have also traditionally enjoyed significant autonomy.
